Got questions? We’ve got answers! The Dougherty County Public Library offers an array of Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers) in response to inquiries on policies and resources. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we have receive:
Library Access & Borrowing
HOW TO LOCATE A BOOK, AUDIOBOOK OR DVD?
All five branches of the Dougherty County Public Library carry books, audiobooks, and DVDs.  All items are cataloged in the PINES  which can be accessed at home or the at any PINES public library.  Books can be held from any of the PINES libraries and sent to a requested branch.
LOOKING FOR A BOOKLIST?
We have a number of booklists readily available for patrons. They are all categorized by age, subject, award winners, etc. You can access them all by looking through the compiled booklists.

Most patrons wireless devices should automatically recognize the library’s network. DCPL uses the wireless network standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b). No password is needed for access.

HOW TO PLACE AN ITEM ON HOLD?
Items may be placed on hold (reserve) for materials not currently available. Holds may be placed in person, by phone, or online with a PINES library card. Patrons willl be notified by their choice of phone, email, or text when the item becomes available.


So that all patrons are provided timely access to high demand items, those items which are on a waiting list may not be renewed. Learn more about placing holds and our other policies here

WHAT IS THE CHECKOUT POLICY?

Library cards grant access to a wealth of educational and entertainment materials. A PINES library card must be presented to check out materials and to access library computers.

DOES THE LIBRARY HAVE WIRELESS PRINTING?
The Dougherty County Public Library now allows patrons to print wirelessly from both inside the library branches or from home! Documents can be sent to any of the five branches as long as they are retrieved the same day.

Most patrons wireless devices should automatically recognize the library’s network. DCPL uses the wireless network standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b). No password is needed for access.

Any patron with a laptop or other wireless devices can access DCPL’s wireless service. Access is free; however, DCPL cannot guarantee all devices will work with wireless network. DCPL uses the wireless network standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b).
WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR USING WIFI?
Wireless Internet access is available to visitors who bring in their own wireless-equipped laptops. Library staff is not responsible for providing computer support for wireless users. Access to the library’s computer network is subject to policies regarding acceptable use and behavior.


The Board of Trustees is committed to making information available in a variety of formats from traditional print and audiovisual materials to the latest in electronically accessed materials. The computers offered by the Library are intended to integrate electronic resources from information networks around the world with the Library’s other resources and, by doing so, provide information beyond the boundaries of its own collection. WHAT IS NEEDED TO USE A LIBRARY COMPUTER?
All that is needed to log into a computer at any of DCPL’s 5 branches is a library card. For the “library card number” type in the barcode number located on the front of the library card. The PIN number is the four digit code that patrons assign to their card upon first getting the card.  If the number was never set by the patron it should default to the last four digits of the telephone number on file.  Visitors from out of state and unable to receive a PINES card need to present their Out of State ID  and ask for a Guest Pass.  Library card numbers and guest passes are NOT given to patrons who forgot or misplaced  their card.

ARE RESEARCH RESOURCES AVAILABLE?
The library carries a large variety of materials that can be checked out, but there is an even larger amount of items available digitally.


GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. A World Wide Web-based virtual library, GALILEO provides access to multiple information resources, including secured access to licensed products. Participating institutions may access over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 2000 journal titles are provided in full-text. Other resources include encyclopedias, business directories, and government publications.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET A LIBRARY CARD?
  • Proof of residency is required to obtain a library card.  The accepted forms to prove residency are:
  • Photo ID showing current address
  • Photo ID and one item from list below
  • Two items from approved list below
    • Checks with “pre-printed” address
    • A utility bill with your name and the current address
    • A voter registration card
    • A tax reciept

WHAT ABOUT HELP WITH OTHER LANGUAGES?
The Dougherty County Public LIbrary card will provide access to Mango Languages.  There are over 70 languages available to learn using conversations through Mango on a computer or smart phone.  The libraries also have some books, audiobooks, and DVDs that can be checked out to assist with a limited number of languages.

HOW TO BECOME A FRIEND OF THE LIBRARY?
The Friends of the Dougherty County Public Library is a non-profit volunteer organization that provides the support needed to maintain a vibrant and modern library system. Through various fund raising efforts, including the Bookstore and used book sales, the Friends sponsor all of the library’s youth programs, many of the library’s adult programs, and supplement the library budget.Being a friend costs little but the return is great! To join the Friends of the Library, pick up a membership form at the library or print one out here.
